Hair Removal: Know the Facts

Actual Patient of Soderstrom Dermatology Center, S.C.

Soderstrom Dermatology Center, S.C. was very pleased in the 1970’s to respond to the public’s request for different services for hair removal.  Over the years, we have developed waxing techniques that we still use today.  In addition, we started out removing hair with a single needle electrolysis epilator, then expanded that service with new technology (computerized sixteen hair removal epilator) and now, of course, lasers are available!  It is important to note that there are many forms of treatment for hair removal.  These include shaving, depilatories, waxing, electrolysis and laser.  Of course, no treatment at all is also an option to dealing with the problem.  No matter what form of treatment is chosen by the patient, a series of treatments is necessary.  After that, maintenance treatments may also be required.

Understanding Hair Growth

Hair grows in several phases (anagen, catagen and telogen).  Some of the hairs are growing while other hairs are resting.  This makes hair removal a major challenge, because, even though all the visible hairs may be removed, there will be other hairs that are not seen that will start growing later.  In addition, hair grows at various rates and with varying coarseness on different parts of the body.  All of these factors must be considered and understood in the course of hair removal.

The quest for permanent hair removal is never ending.  New modern technology has brought us laser removal of hair in the past few years.  The future will continue to bring better machines and better treatment options for permanent hair removal.  Today, patients have more choices than ever, with better results than ever.

As with any treatment, uncertainties and risks still remain, including infection, burn, blister,  pigment changes, scarring and recurrences, however, the risks are overshadowed in most cases by the convenience of the newer therapies and the hope for reduced hair growth, better appearance and improved self-esteem.

Laser Hair Reduction Treatment

Laser hair treatments are the most exciting and newest form of hair removal therapy.  The hair is diminished during a series of treatments with a maintenance program that follows.  Laser beams of light penetrate through the skin with a light/heat effect on the hair follicle.  Once the hair follicle is affected this way, the hairs are thinner and lighter in color and some disappear completely.  Repeated treatments are usually necessary for optimal results.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is said to be the only permanent form of hair removal.  A series of treatments, as well as maintenance treatments, are still required.  As electricity and heat treat each hair root, the hair follicle is eliminated and the hair cannot grow anymore. Because there are thousands and thousands of hairs, this technique, though permanent, takes time and repeated treatments.

Waxing

Waxing is another form of therapy that has stood the test of time, although it is not permanent.  Waxing simply removes the hairs and maintains the skin in good condition until the hairs begin to grow again.  Sometimes the hair roots can be pulled out and it takes months before the hairs start growing again.

Depilatories and Shaving

Depilatories are chemicals that are used to break off the hairs and may be helpful for some patients.  Many people prefer to simply shave, sometimes, once or twice a week is enough and, other times, daily shaving may be necessary.

Vaniqa

Vaniqa Cream is the first prescription cream clinically proven to slow the growth of unwanted facial hair in women.  It works by blocking a hair-growth enzyme within the hair follicle itself.  Vaniqa is not a hair remover but complements current removal methods, slowing facial hair growth.  This cream is available by prescription only and may not be appropriate for all people.  An initial consultation is required.

All of these treatments are offered at Soderstrom Dermatology Center, S.C. and Skin Dimensions. To schedule an appointment, call 1-309-674-SKIN.
